How one guide got written

Take the piece on keeping a car through the winter. It runs to four pages and took a winter to write, and the way it came together is the way all of them do.

The open jaw of a spanner on a worn wooden bench

The reading that came first

Two workshop manuals for cars of roughly that era, which disagreed with each other about drain intervals, and a factory parts list that settled the argument.

The one-make registers, where owners have been comparing the same fault for decades and somebody has usually already tried whatever you are about to try.

Then the trades: a welder, a plater, a trimmer, asked how they work rather than asked to put themselves forward.

How a remark becomes a sentence

Something said across a bench is a lead, not a fact. It goes on a list of things still to confirm.

It is confirmed when a document supports it, or when three people who have never met describe the same behaviour in the same words.

If it survives neither test it appears as what it is, marked plainly as something people say, or else it does not appear.

Why every figure drags a date behind it

Postage, plating, blasting and welding rates have all moved in recent years, some of them sharply.

A cost with no date attached is somebody else's memory. A cost with a date is a fixed point you can hold your own quotes against.

Ranges only, never a single number, and never a figure offered as what the job will come to on your car.

What a revision looks like

The old wording is not deleted from the record. A dated note under the piece sets out what changed and why it changed.

Pages are reworked when something is known to have moved, never because a month has gone by.

The date at the head of a guide marks the last time somebody read it right through with the present situation in front of them.

If you weld, plate, machine or trim for a living and a page misdescribes your work, write in. Being corrected costs less than sounding certain in front of people who know.
